evernote-dropboxThese two great applications seem to have a lot in common. They both save information in the cloud and synchronize the information for you seamlessly on all your computers and mobile devices.

They serve very different purposes though.

Evernote is perfect if you want to easily capture ideas and things you see while you are online or out and about and access them from any computer. It is different from Dropbox in that it is

much more a note-taking application. It is also for syncing docs, notes/txt and webclippings, and photos of things. The OCR (optical character recognition) of Evernote makes finding the information back very easy. Even text found in photos will be recognized and thus found!

Dropbox is superior for syncing files, backups and storage. It creates a local folder on your harddisk of your PC or laptop, and synchronizes it with the online folders of Dropbox. This makes it easy to access by your mobile devices. Dropbox acts as if it is part of your computer, while Evernote really acts as program. This gives Evernote the advantage for finding stuff, categorizing them with tags and notebooks. Dropbox offers a free 2gb storage and has premium offers with more GB's. drop box does not seem to have a maximum size for files to transfer. Evernote has unlimited storage, but uploads are restricted to files of maximum size of 50mb. The free version allows only 50mb uploads per month, the premium version increases this to 500mb. Because Dropbox and Evernote do two very different things, many people use both programs extensively next to each other.

Let us know how you use these two applications!

It actually isn't true that you can add unlimited notes. Even though Evernote says so at https://www.evernote.com/about/premium/, Evernote support tells me that is a "typo".

All accounts are restricted to an absolute maximum of 100,000 notes. Still a lot. But not by any means "unlimited."

I requested they correct it, because it's false advertising, but they still haven't taken any action on it.

The app itself is also wrong, because it tells you approximately how many text notes are remaining this month, and for me it lists like 470,000. But with the absolute cap of 100,000 that's just plain wrong.

any time anybody says you can get anything unlimited, there is a catch. that has been a known fact since the beginning of time. 8)

And yeah, there is no such thing as "truely" unlimited, but when a service has you pay for 1GB a month, you'd think that you could utilize that storage that you're paying for. Whether or not I use 30 notes that use that 1GB or 100,000 text notes that use that 1GB of storage. ?!

I too find this "unlimited" crap unsettling. I program for a living and was going to use Evernote for a place to store my notes/code. To find out that Premium users (I am one) are limited to 100,000 notes is insane. What? Seriously? Of course I find this out after I copy/paste a lot of my files to Evernote thinking this was pretty sweet.

Good review – there are a few recent changes though:

You get 2GB of space with the FREE version, but now there is no restriction to the number of computers you can sync/backup (from 2).
It gives you the ability to upload and sync any folder on your computer.
It is the only service that offers such a broad device and OS support with apps for iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and WinMo.
On the Free version the upload/download is faster than when reviewed :)

Also if you use the below referral code you get 500MB extra on top of the Free 2GB or 16GB extra on any of the paid-for services!

Hope it helps someone.

i think dropbox is better because once you put files on dropbox you can transfer your files on dropbox on my itouch to usb disk where you can read it offline. it's good for lectures in school.

I find both equally useful (just like Live's Skydrive). Yet, just a tip for those who prefer evernote and using kindle, you can use free online sites such as http://clippingsconverter.com to upload your clippings evernote. not sure if there's a similar site for dropbox/skypedrive. :)
